Level 4: Middle School Science
Because students are taught social studies and science in mixed age groupings (7th and 8th graders together in their advisory groupings), we teach these classes in 2 - year cycles: Year 1 are the years starting with an odd number and year 2 are the years starting with an even number. Since we're now in the 2019 - 2020 school year, we're studying Earth Science.

Students participate in one formal experiment during which they write hypotheses and analyze collected data compared to the hypothesis. Students also work in teams to design the best boat design for our physics lab "Gutter Boat Racing". During this year, we take a trip to Fossil, Oregon where we extend and connect our learning about geology and other Earth studies to our specific backyard. With so many wonderful examples of geology around us, we use we many of our Out and Abouts to visit locations where students are able to see and feel the concepts we have been studying in the classroom.

Year 2: Life Science & EngineeringDuring the second year cycle of science we focus on topics of cell theory, genetics, adaptations, evolutionary process, ecosystems, a forensics case, and the engineering process. Students will work in Interactive Notebooks as they read and discuss content from our book series from TCi. Multiple investigations, or informal labs, are embedded in each of the chapters that engage the students and ask them to discuss what they are learning and understanding, as well as focus them on the connections within and across chapters.
